Jon Bon Jovi: Still Rockin, and Making A Killing
Jon Bon Jovi: Still Rockin, and Making A Killing
Over the past 12 months Bon Jovi earned more than Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry--combined. How did that happen?
The next time you play Rock Band don't invite Jon Bon Jovi. The 49- year-old singer's wife and kids recently convinced him to give the popular videogame a try. So he picked up the microphone and launched into a rendition of his classic "Wanted Dead or Alive," backed by family on virtual guitars and drums. He never made it through the song.
"I failed--it buzzed me down," Bon Jovi admits over lunch in Manhattan. "So I stood up off the couch and I said, 'All right, goddamn it, press play.' They did it again, I failed again, and I said, 'Everybody's going to bed. That's the end of this. Turn that shit off.'"
Fortunately for Bon Jovi, audiences in real arenas around the world are kinder. His eponymous band took home $125 million over the past 12 months by FORBES' estimates, more than any other music act besides U2--and more than relative whippersnappers Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Kanye West combined. In the past year the band has played 74 gigs in 15 nations, grossing $203 million in ticket sales and $20 million in merchandise; Bon Jovi ranks No. 8 on this year's Celebrity 100.
Surprised? Bon Jovi out-earns younger, glitzier acts thanks to a relatively affluent, aging fan base who turn out to hear the ballads of their youth and see a tightly run touring machine built on decades of experience.
"They're one of the highest-grossing bands every year," says veteran concert promoter Ron Delsener. "Jon is a workaholic, constantly touring, constantly making loads of money."
Whereas Lady Gaga schleps dozens of dancers from town to town and needs 28 trucks to cart her equipment, Bon Jovi typically plays with six people. A dozen trucks carry the gear, including a circular stage and 192 double-sided LED video screens connected with a specially designed motion control system, which allows them to come together to form a screen 13 feet high and 40 feet wide. At arenas like Montreal's 21,500-capacity Bell Center, the in-theround setup lets the band sell up to 5,500 more tickets than a traditional arena stage would. Wherever possible Bon Jovi plays consecutive nights at the same venue to cut back on setup and strike costs. By playing 12 shows in 19 days at London's O2 arena the band saved $300,000.
"It wasn't some conscious decision to be penny-pinching. I think it's just wise to be efficient," says Bon Jovi. "I know big bands where each of them has personal assistants on the road, each of them has a security guard. We don't have a security guard. Take your own friggin' bags!"
On the revenue side the band's U.S. fans sport an average household income of $78,989, slightly higher than the mean for the 350 music groups tracked by research firm NPD's Brand Link database. The economic difference between Bon Jovi's fans and those of, say, Justin Bieber ($71,389) or Metallica ($71,089) is more than enough to cover a pricey special like the Crush Package, which comes with a grab bag of perks and tchotchkes, including souvenir lanyards, autographed lithographs and two front-row seats that you can fold up and take home after the show. The average cost for this VIP treatment is $2,550 per couple; lowend alternatives set you back $450. Bon Jovi sells an average of 600 individual special package tickets per arena show.
Though regular tickets start at $20, these packages push Bon Jovi's average price to $95, about 50% higher than acts like the Dave Matthews Band ($59) and the Black Eyed Peas ($63). Bon Jovi shows have up to 20 different price points, including special packages; on a recent tour AC/DC offered only one.

Bon Jovi at Mohegan Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Jon Bon Jovi guessed from the stage at Mohegan Sun on Saturday night that it has been “29 to 30 years or so” that the fans have been supporting his rock’ n’ roll dream.
That fan base shows no signs of wavering.
Either does the band.
Bon Jovi played a sold out Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday, the fourth and final stop at the venue along the current tour, and thanked the faithful with a two hour and fifteen minute set of high powered rock.
The production alone was a tribute to the arena rock milieu. Everything above and behind the circular stage moved, morphed, and slid, from the hi tech video screens to the hydraulic risers that, when they weren’t supporting the lead singer, where also serving as video boards.
There may only be a handful of bands that can play an arena rock show like Bon Jovi. In fact, it is this band that might define the genre.
After the bells rung and the whistles whistled, Bon Jovi emerged from all the moving parts to ring up “Last Man Standing,” and followed with “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
The two songs made sense together but represent two very different parts of the band’s career. The latter was recorded when critics were putting Bon Jovi in the same hair-band category as Skid Row, Warrant, and Cinderella.
Anyone know where any of those bands were playing this weekend?
The latter song was also the first spotlight moment for fill-in Phil X, the guitarist who is taking the place of Richie Sambora while the longtime band member is doing a stint in rehab. Phil X is a well-known session player (Daughtry, Avril Lavigne, Alice Cooper) who seemed to fit right in with the group.
After anthems “Superman Tonight,” and “Lost Highway,” Bon Jovi rolled a little country flavor into the mix with the yearning rocker “Whole Lot of Leaving.” Again the newer song was paired with a classic, serving as the prelude to “Bad Medicine.”
It was during “Bad Medicine” that Jon Bon Jovi took leave of the set list and with prompting from Jersey pal and former Cats on A Smooth Surface (and occasional Asbury Juke) Bobby Bandiera wrestled in Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman.”
With the lights down, Bon Jovi made his way out to the center of the arena via the circular catwalk and gave acoustic versions of “(You Want To) Make a Memory,” and “I’ll Be There for You.”
He returned to the stage for “Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night,” subtly dedicating the song to Sambora.
“I can hear your voices,” he said. “You’re all pulling for our friend, right?”
Sambora’s absence seemed to affect the mystique of the band more than the music. Phil X was a formidable replacement and Bandiera, a longtime friend and occasional collaborator with Bon Jovi provided stability as well.
The band closed with “Living On A Prayer,” and put together a strong four-song encore that included “Wanted; Dead or Alive,” with Bon Jovi again thanking the crowd for supporting the band “even when we’re down a man.”
Hartford band Lakshmi earned and opening slot on the show thanks to winning a radio station battle of the bands and handled their half hour set like they were used to playing arena stages.

It's a collision of music titans on Long Island this weekend as both Bon Jovi and Usher headline Nassau Coliseum, with the latest legs of their long-running tours.
BON JOVI
Personal news Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora has reportedly entered rehab to treat alcohol addiction and exhaustion. The band decided to continue with the tour, with former Triumph guitarist Phil Xenidis filling in for Sambora.
Hit-filled set list "Blood on Blood"/"You Give Love a Bad Name"/"Born to Be My Baby"/"We Weren't Born to Follow"/"Lost Highway"/"Whole Lot of Leavin' "/"It's My Life"/"Runaway"/"The More Things Change"/"Sleep When I'm Dead"/"We Got It Going On"/"Bad Medicine"/"Lay Your Hands on Me"/"Who Says You Can't Go Home"/"Work for the Working Man"/"Have a Nice Day"/"Keep the Faith"
Encore "Wanted Dead or Alive"/"Livin' on a Prayer"
Noteworthy opening acts Virtuoso rock violinist Lorenza Ponce will open the Nassau show; Dix Hills native Ryan Star opened shows earlier in the tour.
Awards They're up for two Billboard Music Awards -- Top Touring Act and Top Group -- at the May 22 ceremony.
Sports tie Jon Bon Jovi is co-owner of the AFL's Philadelphia Soul
What critics say "For nearly two hours, Jon Bon Jovi and Phil 'X' Xenidis, Sambora's more-than-capable stand-in, worked extremely hard to deliver a show that, on balance, was more electric and satisfying than Bon Jovi's 2009 Jazz Fest set."

Behind the Scenes: Bon Jovi at Mohegan Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. --
Bon Jovi's been around a long time. The band has played almost 3,000 concerts in more than 50 countries since the late 1980s.
The band's "The Circle" tour was the top-grossing concert tour of 2010. They're still on the road now, several months into their Live 2011 tour.
Bon Jovi's tour this year included two stops at Mohegan Sun, in Uncasville, Conn.: one in March and one Saturday night. NBC 10 went behind the scenes in March to see how the stage is set up.
The trucks roll in before dawn, and the crews get to work. Crew chief Make Savas said at this point in the tour, they have it all down like clockwork.
"Starts at 5 a.m., and we're set up around noon. So, it takes about six or seven hours to knock it out," Savas said.
Savas said the first step is "mark out."
"Mark the floor with chalk, set up the rigging points, the metal cables that hold everything up," Savas said. "They lift that up, and that's the lighting and video rig above your head. While that's being done, they actually build the stage at the other end of the floor. It's on 200 wheels, so they'll roll the stage in with about 30 people pushing it."
About 80 crew members travel with the band, and another 80 are hired locally, just for the day.
The set pieces are the same ones they use at larger venues. It takes 16 semi trucks to carry it all from place to place. Backline crew chief Mike Rew said it's a tight fit setting it up at Mohegan Sun.
"We are lucky we got to put our whole show into the venue. It barely fits, but we got everything in there," Rew said.
The band had special robotic video screens invented and built just for "The Circle" tour. The massive, computerized apparatus lifts the screens into different configurations, even turning them sideways, until they're flat.
"We took the robots that make cars in Detroit and stuck five video screens on five robots. They can move back and forth, and they can spin around 360 degrees and make a shelf for Jon to talk on, which brings him up about 30 feet in the air," Rew said. "It's pretty intense technology."
Once the set is ready, the crew begins an extensive series of sound checks. A couple of people work on tuning dozens of guitars. Most of them belong to guitarist Richie Sambora. He travels with more than $1 million worth of instruments.
"Between 35 to 40 guitars, of which he plays about 15 a night. He switches it up depending on what he's feeling like playing. The guy's a guitar god, as we say, and he likes the different sounds of different guitars," Rew said.
Once the crew's preparations are finished, all that's left is the band's own sound check in the early evening.
And then the show begins.
"It's arena rock, man. We're one of the few acts that can still sell out stadiums and arenas all over the world," Savas said.
Ticket sales for Saturday night's tour earned Bon Jovi a distinction at Mohegan Sun. The band is officially the highest-grossing act ever to perform there.

MEMBERS OF WHITE HOUSE COUNCIL FOR COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS TO HOLD YOUTH LISTENING TOURS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
04/29/11
First Session in New Orleans on April 29 will be one of several with Jon Bon Jovi; Atlanta, Houston and New York City visits planned
Washington, DC – The White House Council for Community Solutions (WHCCS) today announced that Councilmember Jon Bon Jovi will host youth listening tours at various community-based organizations across the country. Bon Jovi, who will be joined by other members of the White House Council, will engage young Americans and community leaders in candid conversations to determine where efforts are most needed. Findings will be compiled in a final report to the Council in June in an effort to highlight solutions. The WHCCS listening tour adds to the White House’s broader effort to engage young people nationwide through youth roundtables.
The first listening session will take place in New Orleans on Friday, April 29, 2011, where youth who have been served by local organizations Café Reconcile, Liberty’s Kitchen, Youth Empowerment Project and Tulane Drop In Center will attend. Additional cities where similar visits are planned include Atlanta, Houston, and New York City.
Currently, less than half of young Americans have the education, training and skills needed to compete in today’s workforce by the time they reach the age of 25. President Obama established the White House Council to bring all sectors together – individuals, business, community organizations, philanthropy, and government – to identify solutions to pressing issues, such as helping young people succeed, and make lasting progress on our national priorities.
After the roundtables, the youth participants can submit their most pressing issues and most inspiring solutions to the White House’s Your Future, Your Solutions: 100 Youth Strategies to Win the Future website. This effort enables the administration to hear directly from young people about the challenges they face and connect participants with Obama Administration officials through conference calls, web chats, and other opportunities.
Established in December 2010 by President Obama, the White House Council for Community Solutions will focus on an issue with critical near-term and long-term consequences for our nation’s health and economic strength – the responsibility of our society to ensure adolescents and young adults are prepared to live productive and prosperous lives. The Council is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. More information about the WHCCS can be found at www.serve.gov/council.
Your Future, Your Solutions: 100 Youth Strategies to Win the Future is an effort that enables the administration to hear directly from young people about the challenges they face. The initiative connects participants with Obama Administration officials through conference calls, web chats, and other opportunities. For more information go to www.whitehouse.gov/youngamericans.

Gibson Lifestyle News Meet Phil X, Richie Sambora’s Replacement in Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora’s temporary replacment is Phil X, an Ontario-born session guitarist. The tour kicked off at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (on April 30) with Jon Bon Jovi announcing at the encore of “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “We’d like to send this out to our brother Richie.”
Phil X was born in 1966 as Philip Xenidis. He’s of Greek descent and the co-founder of the L.A. band Powder. He also has a second band, The Drills. He is used to standing-in: he replaced Rik Emmett in Canadian rockers Triumph for their Edge of Excess album (1993) and tour.
He’s also played guitar for Tommy Lee, Rob Zombie, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Chris Cornell, Adam Lambert and many more.
At Viva Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in Burbank, he’s played with country music collective the Cody Bryant Experience. According to MusicIndustryNewswire, “Phil X drops by to add his powerful guitar to honky-tonk numbers that turn into raging barn-burners that totally kick ass.”
For now, Phil X is the new Richie Sambora. Bon Jovi’s current tour ends in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 31.

Bon Jovi Performs Without Richie Sambora at the New Orleans Jazz Fest
Two days after Bon Jovi announced that guitarist Richie Sambora would take a break, allegedly to return to rehab, the group started a new tour by headlining at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Saturday (April 30).
And the veteran band did so without missing a beat. Filling in for Sambora was the extremely proficient Phil "X" Xenidis, who comes complete with his own set of rock star hair and great moves, though his playing excludes Sambora's nuanced, often bluesy touch.
In what is considered blazing heat anywhere but New Orleans, Bon Jovi took the stage around 5 p.m. with the lesser known 'Blood on Blood' before starting the non-stop hit machine with the very next song, 'You Give Love A Bad Name,' segueing into 'Born to Be My Baby.'
They kept the tempo upbeat throughout, knocking out one arena-rock anthem after the next with a polished precision.
Not that Jon Bon Jovi -- dressed in a black sleeveless vest that became increasingly unsnapped as the show wore on -- needs an apologist, but critics have seldom given him the credit he deserves as a tremendously compelling and commanding frontman who has only gotten better with age. Like U2's Bono or Bruce Springsteen, he works the crowd ceaselessly, constantly taking their collective pulse to see how to take them higher. And while some of the rock star moves may seem rote, the sheer amount of work he puts into making sure the fans have fun deserves far more respect than he's gotten.
But achieving longevity has its own reward, especially when it's been done on the nearly unparalleled worldwide level of success that Bon Jovi has attained and almost all of the groups born out of the same hairband movement of the mid-'80s have long faded away or grown bald.
During 'The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same,' a new song featured on last fall's greatest hits set, Jon Bon Jovi playfully delivered a little speech that more than made his point: "Look around and you've got Justin Bieber. Honey, I remember when there was a Justin Timberlake." He then name checked Jay-Z, noting that he recalled when Ice Cube and N.W.A. ruled the rap world. Then it was Lady Gaga's turn. "Hell, I was there before there was a Madonna... Things change, but there's only one constant... You're looking at it."
Yes, there's a reason almost 30 years since the release of the band's debut album, they remain one of the biggest touring attractions the world over. The Jazz Fest show was prime proof, with Jon Bon Jovi doing whatever it took, whether it was spreading his arms wide open, messianic style; pumping his fists into the air, jumping up and down or even doing a very funny and credible imitation of Mick Jagger's rooster walk during 'Start Me Up' to keep the energy high. And it worked, as it has thousands of times before, like a charm. With his million-watt smile and mirrored shades, he had the 50,000-plus audience eating out of his hand, as they sang loudly to all the hits.
None of this would matter much if his voice wasn't still vital. Even though he started off a little reedy at the Jazz Fest show, Jon Bon Jovi's pipes remain tremendously powerful and gained strength as the two-hour show wore on. Plus, he delivers the rockers, even sub-par ones such as 'Have A Nice Day' and 'We Got It Going On,' bolstered by drummer Tico Torres's relentless pounding, with the same verve as Bon Jovi classics like 'Bad Medicine.'
Oddly, during the main show Jon Bon Jovi never addressed the pink elephant in the room -- that his partner-in-crime for many years was not beside him on stage -- other than to coyly say to the audience, "And what's been going on in your life?," several songs in.
For the encore, Jon Bon Jovi smartly trotted out in a New Orleans Saints jersey, screaming "Who dat," before launching into 'Dead or Alive.' As well as Xenidis played, it was one of the times that Sambora's absence was palpable. To close the show, Bon Jovi performed 'Living on a Prayer,' with the lead singer kicking it off with an a capella verse, his voice having only gained momentum as the night progressed. In the only clear acknowledgement that Sambora wasn't present, Jon Bon Jovi said, "I'm sending this out to our brother Richie." Then, though visibly ragged around the edges from the heat, he went back to bouncing around on stage, with an almost superhuman determination to end the show with as much, if not more, energy that when the band started.

The Boat
Boat
Billy Falcon
I built this boat
The best I could
With hands of love
From the finest wood
I braced the bow
I stitched the sail
I blessed every brass screw and nail
Lord, go with her when the sea is angry
Lord, go with her in the raging storm
Lord, go with her when the days are cruel
Lord, go with her when the night’s too long
Studied the stars, searchin’ to find
The safest course, and the kindest tide
Lifted her down the stony trail
I set her in the water, and raised her sail
Lord, go with her when the sea is angry
Lord, go with her in the raging storm
Lord, go with her when the days are cruel
Lord, go with her when the night’s too long
Worrying from the watchtower
As the red sky fades
My heart drops to my stomach
As she tumbles through the waves
She slips past the horizon
That’s when I realize
She was always yours
Never really mine
Lord go with her when the sun is golden
Lord go with her when way is clear
Lord go with her when the whole world loves her
Lord go with her When I’m. no longer..
Lord go with her when the sea is angry
Lord go with her in the raging storm
Lord go with her when the days are cruel
Lord go with her when the night’s too long
